John Hughes

Artist Bio

John Hughes has been painting the landscape both in and out of the studio since 1983. Although he had been painting on and off since his early teens in New York where he grew up, he says, “That was the year I really got serious about my art.” John and his wife Teresa have lived in Salt Lake City, Utah since 1991, and he maintains a studio in Taylorsville. He  teaches private plein air workshops each summer,  and an oil painting class at Salt Lake Community College. This July he will teach another 3 day summer workshop for the Scottsdale Artist School in the beautiful surroundings of Grand Teton National Park. Another 5 day workshop will be conducted in the rural setting of Spring City Utah in June, this one will be through Kings Cottage Gallery in Salt Lake City. He is a highly sought out instructor and painting demonstrator with a national following. He writes a bi-monthly column to help aspiring artists get reliable information and learn basic procedures that are often hard to find in contemporary art curriculums; the name of the free on line art ezine is 15bytes.

Artists Statements

“I think it is sometimes more effective to say a lot with less than to diminish a work with more and more things; painters often find that less is more in that sense”.

“The landscape has always held a particular fascination for me, but I paint and consider all subjects worthy of my artistic attention.”

“Capturing the effect of light in a painting does more to convey a sense of reality than all the detail an artist can heap on a canvas.”

“In painting, the literal gives meaning to the abstract but, the abstract gives beauty to the literal; combined, the two transcend what could not be accomplished alone.”
